hope i am able to help you abit but mine is not as fantastic:-
my pond is more towards a budget type compared to Mr Goh as mine is not tiled =P
For pond set up, it is a HUGE investment and commitment which many will find it that the initial quotation from contractor is reasonable and affordable.
The set back lies on the filtration media and of course fishes (Best if you already have them) and the ongoing maintenance and feeding will suck ur Vitamin $M$ dry dry ..
Simple explanation:-
1. filtration area must be at least 1/3 of the pond
2. preferable be a gravitational filtration sys which will save up electricity - running on the last chamber pump to determine the flow rate
3. if possible include a vegetation pond before the water flow back into the main pond
4. every chamber must be equipped with air stone for aeration to enhance bacteria growth and at the same time prevent mosquito breeding
5. cheapest filter element will be jap mat but u need tons of it .. even it is the cheapest way .. it is costly because of the amount needed for your filtration. The amount i invested in the filtration is between 2k to 3k inclusive of pumps + air pump + media + others
6. UV Light is a must unless u dun mind the green water
7. Going down into the pond minimum at least once or twice a month is needed to rid of big debris in the pond (fallen leaves, stones ...etc)
8. Recommended equipment: Tsurumi Pump and Hi Blow
9. it takes weeks to a month for the water to mature and becomes crystal clear.
10. Lastly trial and error to the best arrangement for your pond to your liking
11. Of course backup tubs or tanks for your injured or sick aros
And if i were to rebuild my pond this wil be the layout
*outlet to 1st chamber preferable in the centre
*skimmber must be before 1st chamber
*from all the walls to the centre outlet must be slanted downwards so all debris can flow down
*4 x outlet blower from the last chamber creating a circular current so there wont be deadspot
